Visit Mordor, 2017

Visit Mordor

Visit Mordor is a bit of a departure for me.  It’s still a spoof poster, but instead of a fictitious movie, it’s promoting travel.  After all, who wouldn’t want to go to Mordor, right?  Okay, most people.  Still, travel agents have to try to drum up business somehow.

Maybe if the trip were discounted and combined with some other sightseeing spots it would be really cool, right?  Okay, maybe not.  I think the travel agents are going to have to work hard for this one.

All kidding aside, I was going for a stylized look with this piece.  I illustrated the volcano in the foreground with only three colors.  I used a medium brown for the highlights and a dark version of the same tone for shadows.  The lava is yellow.

The mountains in the background are even more simplified.  They are one solid color.  The tower is darker still, with just a bit of highlight on the left side.  The slightly campy-looking eye has the most detail.

The smoke and clouds were done in a softer style to contrast with the stark lines of the mountains.  As usual when I’m working in Photoshop, I used a lot of layers.  The sky is a gradient.  The clouds are in a layer over that.

In order to achieve a somber mood, I kept all the colors in the image dark and subdued on purpose.  To make the image look like a travel poster, I added borders at the top and bottom.  I used a bolder yellow for the text and striping.

Does it work?  That’s up to the viewer.  Still, I think it was an interesting exercise.  I may do more images like this in the future.

This is a digital illustration done in Photoshop.
