Catnip Madness is a parody of a really bad movie poster. Okay, the movie was awful, too. But the poster… yuck! The colors are horrible. The design is horrible.
So naturally I had to copy it. Only with cats. And catnip. And madness.
This is the first movie poster I’ve done that’s actually directly based on something else. While I enjoy making things up out of my head, this was fun, too. I tried to capture the look and feel of the Reefer Madness poster. I think it works as a parody.
In case he looks familiar, the kitty down in the lower right corner is Catroy. I reused part of that image for this poster.
The other cats are new. Since the original poster had a woman with her arms in the air in the lower left, I put a kitten there in a similar pose. He’s hanging from the yellow diagonal thing. Maybe it’s a branch.
The bleary-eyed cat at the top right is a bigger departure from the original poster. I think it works, though.
To create the stylized cats I used Adobe Illustrator. I used Photoshop to put everything together.
In order to capture the look of the original poster, I tried to match the fonts. That was a challenge. There are too many different lettering styles, really. It’s all over the place. Nevertheless, I managed to get close.
For Catnip Madness I changed the word “drug” in the original poster to “herb”. Catnip is an herb, right?
Hopefully this poster will do it’s part to educate the public about the evils of catnip. Or not. In any case, I hope people think it’s as funny as I do. It’s fun to make fun of things that are completely ridiculous to begin with.
Since this image followed an existing design, I didn’t include my usual fine print at the bottom.
